Arman Ben Jacob started golfing when he was about 5 years old. Ever since then, he has been one of the best golfers of his age group. He was in his first tournament in 3rd grade. It was a skills contest for all ages, and he won that at the age of eight. He has been in over 100 tournaments.

The biggest tournament he has been in so far was the Northern Utah Amateur. It was out of 196 people with no age groups. He won that tournament with a score of 62, which is his lowest ever. Armans’ greatest skill would be his tee off. When he tees off he can drive it farther than anyone else, roughly about 350 yards. This is just one of the many skills he has in golf.

In the last competition, which was just the school team match, Ben Jacob took seventh, but everyone has a bad day, and the way Ben Jacob comes back from that will show how great he really is.

Ben Jacob has now qualified for the Utah Open at Oak Ridge Club in Ogden. He is not done yet, and with his talent and at his age, he will continue to improve. He plans on entering many more tournaments and continuing his success in the game of golf.

The Grizzlies definitely didn=t disappoint football fans in their first home game of the season. Logan beat Mountain View 30-24 in double overtime on Friday, August 27. Going into the game, Logan looked to improve from their last win against Bear River. Taylor Lawin who plays O-line said they were working on having fewer penalties and more execution. He felt they were ready for the game after having a hard but successful week of practice. Lawin=s expectations were high and he said he expected to Awin.@ Logan found themselves behind early after Mountain View scored 11 seconds into the game, but the Grizzlies roared back scoring 17 unanswered points. However, Mountain View did not give up and forced it into overtime.

The Bruins got the ball first and took the lead in the first overtime making it 24-17.

Then it was Logan=s turn with the ball. After several successful passes by Nelson to different receivers, Nelson took it the last 3 yards for the touchdown forcing the second overtime.

The Grizzlies got the ball first in the second extra period. Nelson ran for gains and threw John Schmidt a 10 touchdown. Jake Thompson=s extra point kick was blocked which left the Grizzlies in a tight situation. All the Bruins had to do was score a touchdown and kick their extra point to win.

This is where the Grizzly defense came in and took control. Logan=s Austin Rice and Derek Larsen tackled the Bruin=s Bennett Maxwell hard, knocking the ball out of his hands. Logan=s Devin Cannon then recovered the fumble, winning the game and set off a huge celebration on the field and in the stands.

Devin Cannon, a senior who plays strong safety said, going into overtime AI was really nervous, but thought that we could win. I knew after that kick was blocked that it was up to the defense to stop them.@ That=s exactly what they did. Cannon said they recovered the fumble when AMountain View had a bad handoff and Derek was there to knock the ball out. I just saw it rolling on the ground and dove on it.@

The game was finally over and everyone was happy! AThe atmosphere was so much fun! Everybody was jumping up and down in the stands going crazy, it was so exciting!@ said Jordan Houston, a junior watching the game. Cannon agreed AIt felt great to get the win. I was really pumped.@

Logan has now improved to 2-0 and will play Bountiful September 3, on the road. Good Luck Grizzlies!

On August 12th, U.S. District Chief Judge Vaughn R. Walker overturned Proposition 8 after a suit, Perry v. Schwarzenegger, was filed in a Federal District court in San Francisco. The battle for gay marriage has seen strong and passionate determination from both sides, and it is a war that is far from being over. For the past two years much has been said about Prop. 8, but many are unaware of what has been happening.

Beginning in 2010, things began to change for the gay community. With great questioning and backlash, Vaughn’s decision was to overturn the ban and permit these marriages, calling any restriction to gay couples “unconstitutional.” Recently the adjustment to California’s Constitution has been put on hold for an unknown period of time while cases are arranged and all legal work is sorted out.

Proposition 8 was a constitutional amendment passed in November 2008 during state elections. The new provision stated that marriage between a man and woman is the only recognized form in California. This action came as a direct hit to the gay community being five months after the passing of the “In re Marriage Cases”. This was a measure in which the California Supreme Court stipulated that "statutes that treat persons differently because of their sexual orientation should be subjected to strict scrutiny."

On July 16, 2008, a proposed petition to remove Prop. 8 from the November ballot was denied by the California Supreme Court. For the ballot to be qualified, Prop. 8 needed 694,354 valid signatures. MSNBC.Com reported it then received a submitted 1,120,801 signatures. This qualified the initiative for the November 4, 2008, election ballot.

Throughout the 2008 year, many groups, both for and against the proposition, fought

for the support of the state. In particular numerous religious organizations backed Prop. 8 and formed the Protect Marriage; Yes on 8 Campaign. These included the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America, The Roman Catholic Church, and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Other supporting organizations included the American Family Association, Focus on the Family and the National Organization for Marriage.

Those against the measure ranged from The Episcopal Church, The Board of Rabbis of Southern California, and Unitarian Universalists. There was also a backing from such figures as the San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom and the formation of Equality for All being the lead organization opposed to Proposition 8, No On Prop 8 Campaign.

According to The L.A. Times, the end results came to a close split with 7,001,084 (52.24 %) in favor and 6,401,482 (47.76%), tallying 13,402,566 votes representing 97.52% of the state of California. Much speculation and questioning went into the final tally of the vote, but in fact, the majority was in favor of the proposition. This then encompassed the dissolving of any same sex marriages that had already been performed and prevented any new ones from forming.

From the beginning of our country, Americans have counted religious freedom as an undisputed right. Some would argue that America was built upon this very idea, but how many Americans respect this right? In New York City, plans have been made to build a Community Center by a private company.

The center will be built on a lot called Park 51. This Community Center will contain a swimming pool, basketball court, auditorium, library, restaurant, cooking school, day-care facility and a miniature Islamic mosque.

The most disputed aspect of the Community Center is the mosque. Sixty-one percent of the population feel that the “mosque” is being built so close to ground zero it would destroy the memory of the victims of the 9/11 attack while twenty-one percent are in favor of it (TIME TBUs poll).

A Logan High student, Bretton Ashcroft, remarked, “If we don’t build it, it will be like the Terrorist proving their point.”

Romesh Ratnesar, a Time Magazine reporter, pointed out that the location is two or three blocks away rather than across the street like other sources would have you know. Ratnesar wrote, “Merely posing the question is an act of deliberate distortion.” He continued to say, “Allowing a place of worship to be built in lower Manhattan will constitute neither an American triumph nor a defeat. It will simply tell the world that this nation, wisely, has decided to move on.”

Presently on the site of the planned center, there is an abandoned Burlington Coat Factory that hasn’t been used since the landing gear of one of the 9/11 planes fell through the ceiling. Twenty-nine out of 30 lower Manhattan community-board members voted to approve the Community Center, but protests have not gone away.

President Obama advocated support by saying, “[They have] the right to build a place of worship and a community center on private property in lower Manhattan.”

Only time will tell whether the people of the United States of America will allow the Community Center to be built.

Coach Laycey Johns and assistant coach Liz Balls are already leading their team to victory with their win over Hillcrest this past Tuesday. Logan’s JV and Varsity teams have won all three games. The freshman and sophomore teams also won their games at Hillcrest.

The girls are pumped to get into this season. “It’s a tough season,” said Whitney Norton, head captain of the varsity team.

Logan High is a 4A team but for pre-season they play 5A.

“The teams are really looking good,” said Whitney. “We are already planning for state.”

The girls need a bunch of support to keep up their spirits throughout this difficult season. Their first home game will be September 14. Come cheer on the freshman and sophomore teams at 3:30, then stay to see the JV play at 4:35 and Varsity at 6:30.

As Whitney Norton put it “Volleyball is the only game that is tighter than their spandex!”

Both girls and boys league have been preparing for homecoming week, having regular meetings since summer. Homecoming week will start on September 12th and last until the end of that week. Planned activities for this week include the parade, powderpuff game, Brickettes, football game, and end with the dance.

The senior class will paint the street on Sunday, September 12. This is always an enjoyable and wholesome activity.

“Homecoming week is so much fun!!” said Charley Saul.

In years past students have painted local businesses. However, this year will be restricted to the street directly in front of the school.

The homecoming assembly will be Monday September 13 and will include a parade of events and skits about Logan High. The traditional powderpuff game will be Wednesday 15 and will include the Brickettes dancing. Girls league has been organizing powderpuff, while boys league has been organizing the Brickettes. Homecoming week is coming up and is sure to be exciting.

According to Ryan Stephens, “There may be a few surprises.”

By Tevor Truex, Staff Writer

Steam and gasoline flew as cars crashed into the dirt barrier separating the blaring fans from the metal fusing-action. On May 9, Logan City held a demolition derby. This demolition derby had no cowards just circulating around; this was just an all-out war with great performances from all drivers. It was a sight to see the cars, pretty much just rusted over, bent up metal, plowing into one another. Driver’s heads moved from side to side, like bobble heads on a Santa’s stomach as he laughs.

Saturday around 7 p.m. cars started their engines and began to destroy one another in a three round elimination process. Every round started with six vehicles and ended with just one top dog going to the final round to claim the $1000 prize for the 1st place winner.

The first round started off with a bang as early hits were made, causing one car to spit out steam and go into the barrier while others connected as if they were box cars on a train only to be separated by another car making a huge hit. Though this round’s battle ended in the barrier, it was a close match.

After that came the second round where one driver drove a mini coop into a fray of old-town cars. It was tossed around like a rag doll and almost surpassed the dirt barrier when another brown car smashed into its side. One car looked like it was going to take all, sporting yellow paint and a large pirate-looking flag. However, it was also taken out in the beginning of the round and into the dirt barrier.

Finally, came third round with some good hits but nobody really going into the barrier. A lot of the brawling round occurred in the center of the ring. Many cars were intertwined in this round giving less of a spectacle and not as many hits to cheer for, but all the same, there were no cowards running around the ring like chickens with their heads cut off.

Demolition derbies, though fun to watch on the TV, are a blast to watch in person with all the gut-wrenching, near-death action. Though in your gut you don’t want to watch the drivers’ bodies bounce around in their cars, these events are once-in-a-lifetime experiences. There will be demolition derbies to come. Please check Logan City’s event calendar for the next one.

The body has approximately 50,000 bacteria per square inch. The hands come in contact with more foreign objects by touching doorknobs, telephones, toilet seats and handles, shaking hands and by getting sneezed into or coughed upon. Of course, we can eliminate some of these germs by washing our hands. Unfortunately, not many people take advantage of this opportunity to eradicate germs.

As you enter the bathroom and observe people coming out of the bathroom stalls, how many of them wash their hands? And of those who do go to the sinks, how many actually use soap to wash their hands and then dry them? Chances are good that not many do.

In a study done by the American Society for Microbiology, only 2/3 of all Americans wash their hands with soap and water and dry them after going to the bathroom. That means that of the approximate 303,824,640 people in America, approximately 101,274,880 aren’t getting to the sinks after they finish with their trip to the toilet.

Not only is not washing your hands unsanitary to you, but also to those around you. Every time you shake someone’s hand, pat them on the back, or a touch a community object, you pass your germs. Most people aren’t too fond of being touched by piddle ridden hands.

As Stefan Shwaery, junior, so passionately put, “It’s freakin’ gross! When I see someone not washing their hands I think of the word gross.”

Don’t stop with the hand washing at the toilets, though. You should wash your hands often to avoid getting sick. Disinfecting your hands after your use of the latrine is only one time. You should wash your hands after touching animals, handling garbage and raw meats, blowing your nose and treating a wound.

Now you may ask, “How do you get your hands cleaned properly, then?” According to the Mayo Clinic, you should first wet your hands with running water. You then should apply soap to your damp hands and make sure to lather well. Rub your hands together for at least 20 seconds. Keep in mind to scrub all surfaces of your hands. Then rinse your hands thoroughly. And finally, you should dry your hands with a clean towel or air dryer.

Now that you know how and when to wash your hands, go out and make the world a cleaner place by stopping the spread of those nasty germs. Be considerate of others and the fact that not washing your hands does not only affect you. Let’s not make people think of the word gross by not washing our hands. Remember, he/she who maintains cleanliness keeps away disease.
